Introduction
Hello, my name is Totto.
In my last communication with my senior Mr. Choucho, I wondered if there are different PHYs that can be used for different devices. Since then, I have been wondering if there are different PHYs that can be used for different devices.
Devices supporting UniPHY and ALTMEMPHY
senior : "ALTMEMPHY is a PHY before UniPHY was released, so the generation of devices that support it is older."
In the above table, "U" indicates UniPHY and "A" indicates ALTMEMPHY.
The above table is based on the External Memory Interface Handbook.
Totto : "Indeed, the Arria® II GX family before Arria® V only supports ALTMEMPHY!"
From this table, we can also see which memory devices are supported by each FPGA device family.
Totto : "How did you immediately know that Cyclone® V is a UniPHY supported device?"
senior : "Because ALTMEMPHY is grayed out on the IP selection screen of the MegaWizard Plug - In Manager for Quartus® II."
Tooto : "Oh, that's right! That's right! The tool limits the PHY and memory devices that can be selected!"
The External Memory Interface Handbook table and the IP selection screen in the MegaWizard Plug - In Manager for Quartus® II show PHY and memory device support, but there is a tool that can check the performance of the memory interface. However, there is a tool that allows you to check the performance of the memory interface.
However, there is another tool that can be used to determine the performance of the memory interface: the External Memory Interface Spec Estimator.
External Memory Interface Spec Estimator
This page can be found on Altera's website.
Go to the External Memory Interface Spec Estimator page, check the target device.
This allows filtering and helps to understand the performance of the memory interface.
How to use the External Memory Interface Spec Estimator will be explained in the next issue! Enjoy!
Summary of this issue
- ALTMEMPHY is a PHY before UniPHY was released, so the available device generation is old.
- You can check whether a device supports UniPHY or ALTMEMPHY from the table in the External Memory Interface Handbook or the IP selection screen in the MegaWizard Plug - In Manager of Quartus® II.
- A page (External Memory Interface Spec Estimator) is available on Altera's website to check the performance of the memory interface.
