Hello. My name is Ume Onigiri.
The other day I received an inquiry from a customer asking if I could "shorten the configuration time."
I also made a digital clock during my self-study of manufacturing.
I never cared about the configuration time.
I wonder how long the configuration time was at that time.
If it was EP4CE6 used in the production practice,
When the configuration is in AS mode, it takes 73.6 to 147.2 ms.
What a short time, thought Ume Onigiri.
However, depending on the size of the device, the configuration may take several seconds.
Ume Onigiri was surprised at how much difference there is among devices.
So, in this article, I will introduce some "tips to shorten the configuration time.
As an example, let's shorten the configuration time in AS mode of EP4CE6, which I used in my production practice.
Compressing data to shorten the time
First, note the equation for determining the configuration time.
Device data size (bit) × data transfer clock cycle (s)
In AS mode, the configuration time is calculated by the above formula.
If either of these values were reduced, the configuration time would also be reduced.
However, the data transfer clock cycle (DCLK) in AS mode of Cyclone® IV E seems to be a fixed value.
So, let's reduce the data size!
Speaking of reducing data size... "Yes, that's right! Compression!"
Compression can reduce the data size by 35 to 55%.
(* The compression ratio varies depending on the design data.)

Summary
Data compression has reduced the configuration time as shown below.
Before Compression ⇒ After Compression
73.6 ~ 147.2ms 33.1 ~ 95.6ms
Ume Onigiri is satisfied with the reduced configuration time.
