Introduction
We have built an Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS environment on ADLINK's SMARC LEC-EL with an Intel® 6th generation Atom® x6000 processor.
The following is a summary of the procedure.
<Main products used in this project
-
LEC-EL
SMARC module with Intel® 6th generation Atom® x6000 processor (former code name: Elkhart Lake)
-
I-Pi SMARC Plus
SMARC 2.1 reference carrier board with M.2 expansion
- HTS-sEL
LEC-EL heatspreader
(There is also THS-sEL, a LEC-EL heatsink)
Other items to be prepared for this project:
- HDMI cable and monitor
- USB mouse and keyboard
- LAN cable (for internet connection)
- Windows 10 PC (used to write OS image to USB memory)
Reference:
Preparation (USB memory stick for Ubuntu installer)
This time, we will use the ubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso image file of Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS, the latest version at the time of writing this article, as the OS.
(Linux kernel 5.15 or higher is recommended when using Ubuntu on LEC-EL, so you can use the kernel from this image as is.)
Right-click ubuntu-22.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso from the following link to download.
https://releases.ubuntu.com/22.04/
Prepare a USB stick of 8GB or more and write the image file downloaded above.
This time we used balenaEtcher to write the image file.
On balenaEtcher, select the image file, select the USB stick, and execute the writing with the Flash button.
If the writing is successful, the USB flash drive for Ubuntu installer is ready.
2. Hardware Setup
Assemble HTS-sEL (heat spreader), LEC-EL (SMARC module) and I-Pi SMARC Plus (SMARC carrier board) as shown in the picture.
The top is the heat spreader, the bottom is the carrier board, and the SMARC module is placed between them.
Make the following connections.
Connect to the monitor with HDMI cable
・Insert LAN cable (used to connect to the Internet)
・Connect USB mouse/keyboard and USB memory stick
* This time, we used USB Hub as shown in the picture.
3. Ubuntu installation and Ubuntu startup
Connect the power adapter to boot. Press the Esc key to enter the BIOS screen.
On the Boot tab, check that the USB memory stick for the Ubuntu installer is recognized under Option,
On the Save & Exit tab, specify this USB memory in Boot Override to boot and install Ubuntu on the 32GB eMMC with built-in SMARC.
If the Ubuntu installation is successful, the Ubuntu 22.04 screen will appear on the HDMI monitor as shown below.
Summary
This time we used the Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS OS image, but you can also use the OS image provided by ADLINK. Please give it a try.
